Emotions, What’s The Point?

When was that last time you paid attention to what your body was trying to tell you?

You were given your body to enable you to experience life through it. It is through your sense that you can experiences all that life has to offer.

Your nose allows you to smell the sweetness of a rose or that you have burnt your toast. Your tastebuds allow you to enjoy your food.

You ears enable you to hear the birds chirping in the early morning. Your eyes allow you to see the beauty that nature has to offer.

Your sense of touch allows you to experience the tenderness of someone’s embrace or the pain of touching a hot pan on the stove.

Your emotions enable you to add animation to your life. You are given all these senses to enable you to experience the fullness of life.

So often you take these senses for granted. I’ve noticed with my mother who can no longer hear so well, that she misses out on what gets said. She is missing out on the all those sounds that enable her to take in the fullness of life.

Like your five senses, your emotions enable you to add meaning to your experience. It is what you decided to do with the information you receive through your senses that you equate meaning to. When someone makes you angry, it motivates you to have that blind bit of our courage to do something brave that you wouldn’t normally do.

When someone makes you sad, it gives you that option of having compassion for yourself or those around you.

How often do you pay attention to what is going on around you, and what is happening to you? Do you just blindly go through life without taking note of what you are being told?

Do you experience emotion but then suppress it as society dictates that you are not allowed to feel that way. You are not allowed to be angry because it is not socially acceptable. You are not acting in accordance with what other people or society expects of you.

But forget society and others, be free to feel the fullness of life. I give you permission to feel all it is that is going on within you. It is OK to be angry or sad or confused. It may not be OK to purposely hurt or harm someone else because of what you feel but it is OK to feel.

Sometimes you get hurt so you cut off from what you are experiencing to feel a sense of control but it dulls your sense of life. It restricts your fullness of life.

So feel every emotion within your being but just don’t get stuck there. Emotions are like a wave, they are meant to flow. Allow them to wash over you but let them go. Hanging on to them just creates discomfort and pain.

Allow yourself to experience that annoyance or anger towards your colleague or partner but let it go. Feel it, observe it and let it go.

Becoming attached to emotions and getting carried away with them is like jumping onto a runaway horse. It takes you on a journey to the unknown and you miss the path down which you were headed.  You have a choice to jump off the horse at any stage. Feel it but don’t get lost in it.

How often do you stay on your runaway horse?
